“Tauba Tauba was a career-defining moment for me, as an artiste. The connection fans felt with the song surpassed everything I could have hoped for, showing just how powerfully music can unite cultures,” says 27-year-old Punjabi singer-songwriter and rapper Karan Aujla. The performer, who is currently gearing up for his much-anticipated India tour, adds, “Collaborating with Vicky (Kaushal) was an absolute privilege; his genuine love for Punjabi music and charisma brought a unique energy to the track.”
Karan’s It Was All a Dream India tour next month, presented and produced by Team Innovation, has sold two lakh tickets and filled three arenas in record time. The tour has amassed an impressive ₹75 crore in collections. And due to overwhelming demand, the planned four concerts, have been expanded to 11 shows across eight cities.
The high point
“I have always wanted to create a meaningful experience for my fans in India, but logistical challenges have held me back from touring until now. This tour celebrates Punjabi music and the bond I share with my audience. I wanted to ensure that my first tour here would be special, and I’m thrilled to make it happen finally,” says Karan, who admits to having mixed feelings — of excitement and nerves.
Challenges aplenty
Karan’s early years were carefree until tragedy struck; he lost his father at just nine and his mother at 14. “Suddenly, I had new responsibilities, including arranging my move to Canada to live with my older sisters,” he shares. Adjusting to a new country was tough — he worked odd jobs while chasing his dream of making music. “There were plenty of rejections as I tried writing for others, but the support from fans kept me going,” he says.
These hardships shaped his identity and taught him powerful lessons. “The pain and experiences from my past are a lasting part of my identity and inspire my vision for my future,” Karan says. “That angst fuels my creativity; as I grow as an artiste, those emotions remain essential to my music and self-expression.”
Having started writing at a young age, Karan reflects on whether he now considers himself a better writer or singer. “I feel I’ve grown in both areas. Writing is a key outlet for expressing my emotions and experiences — it is a big part of who I am. At the same time, my singing has developed a lot, and I’m always working on both skills. They complement each other, enhancing the other in my music,” he shares.
Punjabi connect
Karan attributes much of his musical style and perspective to his upbringing. “Growing up in Punjab instilled in me values like strength, humility, and the significance of community. It deepened my pride in my roots.”
He attained fame and recognition after moving to Canada and made most of his music while in Canada, before moving to Dubai in 2023. Karan explains how his music balances Punjabi roots with international influences: “It’s about staying true to myself while embracing new styles. Living in Canada and now Dubai has introduced me to diverse music, which I blend with my cultural background. My lyrics are deeply personal, drawn from my own experiences, and I incorporate global sounds into my production. This allows me to create music that resonates with a wider audience without losing my Punjabi identity.”
