Late actor, Rishi Kapoor had often been vocal about his strained relationship with his late father and actor-filmmaker, Raj Kapoor. Rishi even addressed the same in his autobiography, Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, wherein he wrote that his father was rarely at home due to his work schedule. The Chandni actor confessed that he had started dreading his father’s return during childhood. While people are aware of their turbulent history, not many know that the father-son duo went on to form a close bond later in life. Recently, Raj’s granddaughter and Rishi’s daughter, Riddhima Kapoor opened up about her father gifting the entire collection of her grandfather’s movies to her father-in-law, Shrawan Sahni.
Riddhima Kapoor reveals Rishi Kapoor gifted the entire collection of Raj Kapoor’s films to her father-in-law
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni may have been born into a filmy family, but the fashion designer chose to live most of her life out of the spotlight. It was only in 2024 that she made her screen debut with the popular Netflix reality show, Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives. Since then, Riddhima has done several interviews and revealed several tidbits about Bollywood’s most legendary family, the Kapoor clan.
Riddhima’s recent chat with SCREEN was no different as she opened up about a sweet gesture her father, Rishi Kapoor made towards her father-in-law, Shrawan Sahni. She revealed that she has the entire collection of her grandfather, Raj Kapoor’s movies, as they were gifted to Shrawan by Rishi. Recalling their fond tradition of watching one movie ‘every other day,’ Riddhima said:
“I have his entire collection with me here. When I got married, my father gifted my father-in-law the entire collection of Raj Kapoor movies. We used to watch one every other day. He gifted the series in 2006, it was a really special gift.”
Riddhima Kapoor says she ensures her daughter, Samara watches her great-grandfather, Raj Kapoor’s films
For the uninitiated, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and her husband, Bharat Sahni are doting parents to their daughter, Samara. Well, Riddhima is making sure that Samara knows just how legendary her great-grandfather, Raj Kapoor was in the film industry. The fashion designer-turned-reality star opened up about her tradition of showing her daughter Raj Kapoor’s films.
Riddhima admitted that since Samara is now in her teens, she does get distracted easily. However, the doting mommy still tries her best to let her daughter know that her great-grandfather has done awe-inspiring work. In Riddhima’s words:
“I just showed her Mera Naam Jokar and Boot Polish, something to start off with. Of course, she is 13 so gets a little distracted, but I keep telling her that your great grandfather had done these movies and he was legendary. She did watch a little bit of it and knows of him, but she is a teenager, so too distracted to sit and watch the entire film at one go. However, she loves my mom’s film Do Kaliyan, that’s her favourite film.”
Riddhima Kapoor can’t choose whether she likes Raj Kapoor more as an actor or a director
Not too long ago, in a session at IFFI, Goa, Ranbir Kapoor was asked whether he preferred his grandfather, Raj Kapoor better as an actor or a director. Well, the Animal star opted for the latter. Riddhima was asked the same question in the chat with SCREEN, and she responded:
“I would say both to be honest. I have watched each and every film of his, right from Aawara, Shree 420, to Boot Polish. It’s unfair to choose if he was a greater director or actor, I can’t pick one like Ranbir did. He is and will always remain a legend in my eyes.”
