Sharma could be our most Indian director in the Hindi film industry. He’s not turned on by western sensibilities and always chooses to milk Desi sentiments to the last drop, even if it looks aged. A aging parent’s emotions for his children always remain the same. It will be interesting to see how the audiences respond to the filmmaker’s dramatic sentiment, especially when the action genre has taken over. A film that’s coming out between two high-octane monikers, Pushpa 2 and Baby John, Vanvaas has a long journey ahead, akin to the protagonist. He does give us a lump in the throat, but at times, a s(lump) too.

Overall, it is quite disappointing to go for a Nana Patekar film and return without having a single element that makes you want to remember his films. Anil Sharma, who played the safe cards with Vanvaas, has landed up presenting a quite below-par film that cannot be saved even by Nana Patekar.

In a bid to make Vanvaas the new-age Baghban, director Anil Sharma misses out on adding a basic human touch. Weak character sketches are further marred by overacting. The intention behind Vanvaas is honest but the clumsy treatment robs off its true flavours. Despite the vibrant colours, it is a hard and bitter pill to swallow.

Overall, ‘Vanvaas’ impresses because of Nana Patekar and Utkarsh Sharma as well as some good scenes, but the pace and the additional cast make it a bit tiresome. If the film was sped up and some of the parallel stories were removed, it could have been a much better experience.

Whatever its sins of clunkiness, Vanvaas makes up for its meandering mood whenever Patekar and young Sharma are on screen together. They seem to be having a lot of fun with their parts, even when the writers are more keen on length than breadth. Eventually the 2 hour 40 minute expedition into filial failings leaves us with sense of regret: for all the abandoned parents of the world , and for this film which could have been so much better with a bit of trimming around the edges, abandoning the superfluous characters in this feelingly staged fable of abandonment.
