The actor, whose candour is loved by many, once again bared his heart out recently, in an emotional conversation, recalling his journey to becoming financially independent at a young age.
Arjun Kapoor opens up about the trauma of losing his mother in his early 20s
Arjun Kapoor is the oldest child of Boney Kapoor, and, given his family background, he has also been under public scrutiny as yet another ‘star kid’, after his Bollywood debut in Ishaqzaade. However, life has not been quite in his favour. Recently, in a conversation on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Arjun reflected on his hardships, opening up about the profound impact of losing his mother, Mona Shourie Kapoor. Arjun shared:
“It was a tricky time. My past is very heavy. There is a lot of baggage in my past, there is a lot of trauma…I completely respect the fact that people think we’ve had it easy…I never doubt how tough it is for somebody coming in from the outside and trying to make it into this profession. But why do you feel it is easy for me to live the life I’m living?”
Despite coming from a legendary family, Arjun Kapoor’s journey has been shaped by the profound trauma of losing his mother at 24. Her passing, just before the release of his debut film, Ishaqzaade, left him broken. In Arjun’s words:
“Contextualise my life a bit…You can go home, maa ki god mein sar rakhke so sakte ho. I can never do that, main apni maa ki god mein sar rakhke nahi so sakta…I have a few things that God has given me…but I don’t have what you have. Should I envy you? Should I have negativity towards you for having a mother?…You have something that I don’t have any will ever have again. How much ever I pray for it, she’ll never be with me again.”
Arjun Kapoor’s journey to becoming independent without financial aid from his family
Arjun further shared how the loss of his mother motivated him to stand on his own two feet and care for his sister, Anshula Kapoor. Today, Arjun is proud of the identity he has made for himself. The Singham Again actor told Raj Shamani:
“I am an independent person. My father and mother supported me to whatever extent they could but financially, I became independent the day I started working…My first pay cheque was Ishaqzaade and my mother passed away without knowing my future is in this…After that, till today, I have never (asked for anything from my father) and he knows that, and is proud of me for doing that. I want him to be proud of the identity I have created for myself…My mother also would be proud of exactly this.”
