Bollywood actor, Varun Dhawan is gearing up for the release of his action film, Baby John, which will hit theatres on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024. Varun has been busy with promotional events and interviews to build anticipation and excitement for the same. Along with sharing tidbits about the film, the actor has blessed fans with several personal revelations and stories. Most recently, Varun opened up about a more sombre incident involving his driver’s sudden passing, getting emotional as he recalled the moment. The actor further discussed how this tragic event changed him as a person.
Varun Dhawan opens up about the sudden demise of his driver, Manoj and their close bond
Actor Varun Dhawan recently sat for a candid chat with Ranveer Allahbadhia on the latter’s YouTube channel. During the conversation, the Bhediya star recalled the gut-wrenching moment when his driver, Manoj suddenly passed away. Varun further elaborated on his close bond with Manoj, who had been his driver for 26 years. On the verge of tears, Varun recalled doing CPR on Manoj and then rushing him to the hospital. In his words:
“I was very close to Manoj, who was my driver for many years. He passed suddenly while we were working. I did CPR. We took him to Lilavati Hospital and we got him there on time. It was like we saved someone’s life. But he passed away in my arms. It was hard to see how casual was his passing. It just happened like that.”
For the uninitiated, Varun had earlier revealed that his driver, Manoj’s death occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Manoj had successfully recovered from COVID. However, only a week later, the driver suffered a fatal heart attack. Talking about the tragic event in a past interview with India Today, the actor said it had affected him a lot mentally.
Varun Dhawan says he used to think he was a ‘hero’ who could ‘save the day’ until Manoj’s death
Varun Dhawan, baring all in the conversation, talked about how he had lived in a ‘bubble’ and had an ‘idealistic’ view of himself prior to Manoj’s passing. The actor confessed that he thought he understood life, but his driver’s unexpected demise had entirely altered his perspective. Poetically saying that there was a Varun Dhawan ‘before and after 35’, the actor emotionally continued:
“I used to see myself in an idealistic way—that I’m a hero, and I can save the day because I literally play a hero onscreen. But on that day, I failed myself.”
Varun further elaborated that the impact of Manoj’s death hadn’t just been personal but also professional. The actor pointed out that his upcoming project, Baby John was being released after nearly two years. According to the actor, his driver’s death had hit him so hard that he had even worked less as he tried to come to terms with the loss.
Varun Dhawan reveals reading religious texts to cope with the tragic loss of Manoj
Varun Dhawan, who was overcome with grief after Manoj’s sudden demise, found solace in religious texts. While speaking with Ranveer, the actor opened up about having an overwhelming amount of questions and seeking their answers in the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, and Ramayana. Varun can be quoted as saying:
“I realized you have to move forward as a human being. These incidents shake you, but you can’t stay stagnant. I began reading the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, and Ramayana—just randomly—because I had so many questions. Bohot jawab mile. You have to move on.”
