Seasoned television and silver-screen actor, Ram Kapoor has been grabbing headlines of late, following his dramatic weight loss in the past few months. While the actor has garnered significant praise for his impressive health transformation, fans cannot help but miss the cute and chubby ‘Ram Kapoor’ from his iconic television show alongside Sakshi Tanwar, Bade Acche Lagte Hain. However, the show’s producer, Ekta Kapoor had to face some backlash after featuring an intimate scene between Ram and Sakshi in the show, which was a rather bold move back then.

For the unversed, Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar, who played the characters ‘Ram’ and ‘Priya’ in the popular TV show, Bade Acche Lagte Hain, had shared an on-screen kiss. This became an iconic moment as it marked the first-ever on-screen kiss in Indian television history. Recently, in a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, veteran actor Ram Kapoor revisited the scene, and shed light on the challenges of filming the bold scene. He said:
“Mera kaam as an actor is to do my job. I don’t owe an explanation to anybody… Mera kaam hai script ko follow karo… Main kaise bol sakta hu ki ye main nahi kar sakta, tab main actor nahi hu…so I did nothing wrong.”
Ram further added how the producer was the one deciding whether or not to include a scene into a particular story. In this case, also, the accountability went to the show’s producer, Ekta Kapoor. Recalling his initial concerns about how such a bold portrayal might be received, Ram shared:
“Ekta’s the one who wrote the scene, wanted us to do the scene… I told Ekta, ‘Are you sure? Ye television mein pehle kabhi hua nahi hai, it was the first kiss of television, which is a big thing. And three generations watch (the show) together… but Ekta was very confident ki wo karna hai…. I said, okay, I’ll first get a go-ahead from my wife… Fir maine Sakshi ko bola ki look, I will handle Ekta, if you have a problem, tell me.”

Ram shared a heartwarming anecdote about Sakshi’s family and their unwavering trust in him. Talking about how his co-star, Sakshi Tanwar and her family felt about the whole situation, Ram candidly told Siddharth Kannan:
“Sakshi’s father said the most amazing thing to me… I can never think of anything with my co-stars… Sakshi’s father called me and said ki ‘Ram, tu hai, toh sab theek hai.’ They trusted me… so we went ahead and did it… it took two nights… Ekta suffered the consequences later.”
Ekta Kapoor’s response to the intimate scene backlash
While the scene is now considered groundbreaking, it was met with significant backlash at the time. Speaking about the aftermath, Ekta Kapoor admitted the bold move hurt the show’s ratings. In 2017, Ekta addressed the issue and revealed how the lip-lock scene had shot the show’s TRP ratings to 2, while the prior ratings were 6 and 5.
