The fourth season of Shark Tank India has just begun with its second week, and it’s already starting with a bang. On the first episode of its second week, the stage was graced by the social media’s favourite influencer, Jodhpur, Pooja Balani, also known as Miss Cheesecake and Narpat Singh Rathore. The duo appeared on the show to pitch their cheesecake brand, Miss Cheesecake, to the panel of ‘sharks’.

Miss Cheesecake revealed her family was threatening to marry her off on Shark Tank India 4

The founders, Pooja Balani and Narpat Singh Rathore valued their business at Rs. 6 crores and asked for Rs 30 lakh in exchange for 5 per cent equity. Considering the previous asks on the show, this was a relatively low-stakes pitch, and the ‘sharks’ seemed to be in agreement about most aspects of the business. During her pitch, Pooja shared that she only started her company a year ago. Talking about the back story of how she chose the business route, she revealed that she started the brand after her family threatened to marry her off when she quit her job.

Pooja revealed that she was looking for something to delay the inevitable, and that’s how she began making cheesecakes despite having no previous experience in baking. However, after some trial and error and undevoted practice, she was able to perfect her recipe and began selling her cheesecakes only on weekends at a local store. During her pitch, she also took a humorous jab at Anupam Mittal, revealing how the latter played a role in her story. Pooja was quoted saying:

“Mujhe shaadi karni nahi thi, life mein kuch karna tha. I would be so angry every day at the man who made Shaadi.com, because my parents put my profile on the site.”

Kunal Bahl was impressed by Miss Cheesecake’s journey

Continuing the pitch, Pooja Balani revealed that it was with her co-founder, Narpat Singh Rathod’s help that she managed to set up a small shop in Jodhpur. She added that their revenue was over Rs. 8 lakh per month. Kunal Bhal labelled himself as an expert in everything that is related to cheesecake and shared that he was impressed by her journey. He was quoted saying:

“Who would have thought that you could sell Rs 1 crore worth of cheesecakes in a year from a 100 sq ft shop in Jodhpur. Our country is changing. The tastes of consumers are changing.”

Miss Cheesecake’s 60 million views fail to impress the ‘sharks’

Even though Kunal Bahl was impressed by Pooja Balani’s journey, he opted out of investing in the business, stating that it was simply too early to invest in the business. Aman Gupta agreed with Kunal and advised Pooja and Narpat to get more partners on board and scale the business up before taking funding. Namita Thapar also had the same thought and opted out. Anupam Mittal, however, was the only ‘shark’ who commented on the products and stated that they were too sweet for his taste, which was the primary reason why he wasn’t interested in investing. Despite the founder’s million followers on Instagram and their most-watched reel getting over 60 million views, it failed to impress the ‘sharks’.

Ritesh Agarwal made an offer to Miss Cheesecake’s founders

Even though the rest of the ‘sharks’ were out, and Ritesh Agarwal resonated with the same ideas the other sharks shared, he decided to make an offer. He said, “A decade ago, I faced so much rejection. Kunal rejected me as well, and why wouldn’t he? I had no background. But I believe in you, and I will offer you Rs 30 lakh, but in exchange for 7.5 per cent equity.”. The founders countered Ritesh to make the equity 5 per cent, but Ritesh didn’t budge, leaving the founders with no deal but pleased about the advice they received.
