Jaya Bachchan Revealed Why She Didn’t Let Amitabh Bachchan Work With Rekha, ‘Both Of Them Realise..’

Bollywood corridors have stories of many rumoured and secret relationships, but over the years, these stories seem to fade on their own. But the love saga of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha still raises many eyebrows. One of the most scandalous affairs of Bollywood, Amitabh’s name was linked to the vivacious Rekha after three years of his marriage to Jaya Bachchan, and even today, it is the most widely discussed topic.

Though Amitabh Bachchan has always denied rumours of his relationship with Rekha, she has often given hints, making the story believable. Silsila was the last film in which Rekha was seen with Amitabh Bachchan, and reports stated that it was Jaya who stopped her husband from working with Rekha.

Jaya Bachchan revealed why she didn’t let Amitabh Bachchan work with Rekha

In a throwback interview with People magazine, Jaya once addressed the rumours that she was the reason Amitabh and Rekha did not work together. Jaya called the pairing a sensation and said:

“Why should I mind? But I feel it will be more like a sensation than actual work. And that’s a pity because one will miss the opportunity of seeing them together. Both of them probably realise it will go beyond work.”

In the same interaction, Jaya also addressed Rekha and Amitabh’s rumoured affair. The versatile actress stated that her life would have turned into hell if she had taken the rumours seriously. In her words:

“If there was any, he would have been somewhere else, na? People liked them as a couple on screen, and that’s fine. The media tried linking him with every one of his heroines. My life would have been hell if I had taken it all seriously. We are made of sterner stuff.”

Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan alleged affair began on the sets of Do Anjaane. She had known Mr Bachchan since he was dating Jaya. But during the shooting of Do Anjaane, Rekha couldn’t stop herself from falling for an already-married Amitabh. Because of his marital status, Amitabh and Rekha’s relationship couldn’t attain a happy ending. 

Once, in a throwback interview with Stardust, Rekha recalled an incident when she saw Jaya crying while watching the love scenes between Amitabh and Rekha in the film, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. Rekha stated that a stream of tears poured down from Jaya Bachchan’s face during the trial show of Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.

After a week of the trial show, Rekha was told by her friends in the industry that Amitabh would no longer work with her. In the same interview, Rekha talked about the same and revealed that she also confronted Mr Bachchan. Elaborating on the same, Rekha said:

“A week later (after the trial show of Muqaddar Ka Sikandar), everybody in the industry was telling me that he (Amitabh Bachchan) has made it clear to his producers that he was not going to work with me. Everybody else informed me about it but he didn’t say a word on the subject. When I tried to question him about it, he said, I am not going to say a word. Don’t ask me about it.”

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan had a chat mangni pat vyaah, and the reason is quite interesting. Amitabh and Jaya wanted to go to London to celebrate the success of their film, Zanjeer, along with other friends. But Big B’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, told him that he could go with Jaya only when the two were married. And on June 3, 1973, the couple embarked on the journey of their ‘happily ever after’.
