Recently, we stumbled upon Amitabh and Jaya’s first radio interview post-marriage, in which they opened up about a few details about their sudden, secret wedding.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan reveal their wedding got preponed because of London trip

Recently, we stumbled upon a recording of the first radio interview Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan gave after tying the knot. The interview took place in London, as the couple travelled to the city just after getting hitched. In fact, their trip to London significantly influenced Amitabh and Jaya’s decision to get married!

For the uninitiated, before Amitabh and Jaya’s Zanjeer was released, their friends made a condition that if the movie was a hit, they would go to London. However, the actor’s parents rejected the idea, saying he could not go out with a girl unless he married her. Instead of feeling dejected about their denial, Amitabh took the biggest step in his love life and felt this was the right opportunity to take the wedding vows.

In the radio interview, Jaya Bachchan revealed that their decision to marry was made only seven days before their London trip, and the wedding took place just one day before they flew out. Amitabh added that he and Jaya had felt the urge to get married at the same time, but they had initially settled on October 1973 as the wedding month. The Silsila star stated that even though their parents had been informed about the same, they ended up tying the knot a few months earlier.

Jaya Bachchan’s uncle, Himanshu, was also present during her and Amitabh Bachchan’s radio interview. Despite Himanshu residing in London, he wasn’t aware of Jaya and Amitabh’s secret nuptials until they arrived in the city. Jaya tried to clarify that she had informed him over the phone.

However, Himanshu noted that while Jaya had called him and told him that she had something very shocking to tell him, she didn’t actually drop the big news. Amitabh then came to Jaya’s defence, saying that the situation was hardly surprising as even the servants in their houses weren’t aware that they weren’t getting married. Himanshu then expressed his happiness for the couple’s marriage and the fact that they had shown up to see him so soon after tying the knot.

Amitabh Bachchan says if he was in London without getting married, he might feel emptiness

During the interview, Jaya Bachchan’s uncle, Himanshu, also asked the couple if being in London without work ever made them feel like they were wasting time. Amitabh noted that they didn’t, as there was so much to do and see in London. He added, however, that if they had come to the city without getting married, then they might have felt some ‘khalipan.’

The couple also gushed about the freedom they had to roam around in London and enter shops, which they couldn’t do in Bombay. On that note, Amitabh shared a hilarious anecdote about being recognised by a girl in Madame Tussauds. The girl had been with her mother, but the latter had a hilarious reaction. Amitabh narrated:

“Usne kaha dekho dekho! Amitabh Bachchan hai woh! Ek dum ussi ki tarah lag raha hai, baal bhi waise banaye hue hai. Toh maa keh rahi hai nahi nahi Amitabh Bachchan nahi, koi aur hoga lekin lag ussi ki tarah raha hai.”
