Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who is known for calling a spade a spade, revealed his disappointment with the Hindi film industry. The actor-director also claimed he is so “disgusted” with the industry that he’s planning to relocate to the South for a “stimulative” environment in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Anurag Kashyap held the talent hunt agencies responsible for driving aspirants to become stars instead of honing their skills as actors. Anurag Kashyap, who earlier spoke about the rising entourage costs, once again harped on the subject, asserting how the art of filmmaking has been reduced to a profit making machine.
“Now it is difficult for me to go out and experiment as it comes at a cost, which makes my producers think about profit and margins,” Anurag Kashyap told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about how to sell it. So, the joy of filmmaking is sucked out. That’s why I want to move out of Mumbai next year.
I am going to the South. I want to go where there is stimulation. Otherwise, I will die as an old man. I am so disappointed and disgusted by my own industry. I am disgusted by the mindset,” the director-actor said.
Anurag Kashyap cited an example of film like Manjummel Boy, which he believes, Bollywood would never think of but would come up with a remake if it’s a hit. “The mindset is to remake what’s already worked. They will not try anything new,” he said about the lack of originality in Bollywood.
Sharing from his lived experiences, Anurag Kashyap said he was ghosted by people whom he thought as “friends.”
“One of my actors, whom I thought of as friends, ghost you because they want to be a certain way. That happens mostly here; it doesn’t happen in Malayalam cinema,” he mentioned upholding the unity of the Malayalam industry.
Anurag Kashyap recently acted in the Malayalam action thriller Rifle Club, which was released in theatres on December 19. Aashiq Abu directed and produced the film.
