“If you close your eyes and listen to music, music consumes you, it takes you into a state of meditation. In a dark room with strangers, music becomes your safe space,” says pianist Anil Srinivasan, discussing the seventh edition of Concert in the Dark. The concept is meant to immerse the audience in the world of music through darkness, as the musicians are blindfolded while the audience is kept in the dark.

The only thing connecting the two is the music.

The concept was initiated in 2018 in support of charity for the visually impaired. The pianist was inspired to start this initiative after visiting Gnanadarshan Seva Home for Visually Disabled Women. He says he did so to bridge the gap between merely donating for charity or playing at benefit concerts and connecting with those in need directly.

While he started the first edition of the concert by merely blind-folding himself, soon his co-artistes joined him.

Anil Srinivasan calls the concert “different from the usual Margazhi offerings” as it is based on an immense amount of trust among the musicians. The team consists of Srinivasan, Naveen Napier on bass guitar and Krishna Kishor on percussion. The concert also includes popular musical group Kiran + Nivi along with an opening act by the 16-year-old upcoming musician, Anandita Arun.

The concert will be performed at NAAM Centre, T Nagar, on December 22, 6.30pm onwards. To join the concert, drop a message to 9003015205. All proceeds from the concert will go to the Gnanadarshan Seva Home for Visually Disabled Women.
