Archana Puran Singh reveals her co-judges told her not to laugh when jokes were about them
The sets of Comedy Circus saw many judges come and go, including Rohit Shetty, Shekhar Suman, and Sohail Khan. However, the one person who remained a constant fixture was Archana Puran Singh. Recently, she opened up about her experience working alongside her co-judges, who didn’t like jokes about them. In a podcast with laughter queen, Bharti Singh on her YouTube channel, Bharti TV, Archana recalled her co-judges questioning why she would laugh at jokes about the judges, saying:
“My co-judges used to get all disappointed when I used to laugh at jokes made on them. They used to be like, ‘Archana why do you laugh at jokes made on us? Judges ki garima kam hojayegi. I had no clue what the word garima meant, I had to look for it in dictionary.”
Archana Puran Singh says letting comedians make jokes about her helped them improve their skills
Archana Puran Singh then discussed her experience working with Kapil Sharma. She revealed that the comedian’s jokes about her had never made her ‘feel bad.’ Archana emphasised that the only reason she laughed at Kapil’s jokes was because she genuinely found them extremely funny. She claimed that her reactions had never been ‘forced’ for the camera.
Archana further stated that giving comedians the space to make jokes about judges helped them improve their skills. Talking about how comedians like Bharti would feel nervous to make jokes about her at first but grew confident when she would laugh, Archana said:
“Whenever all of you delivered punch lines on me (during comedy circus), you guys used to be a bit worried about it, but when you saw me laugh at it, you all got better at it. Other judges would get really upset.”
Archana added that among all the judges, Rohit had been the only one to laugh at such jokes every now and then. However, Shekhar would always ‘remain quiet,’ as he was conscious of jokes about him. However, after seeing Archana genuinely enjoy the jokes about her time and again, he eventually gave in and started laughing, too.
When Archana Puran Singh opened up about being instructed to laugh at bad jokes on TGIKS
In a media interaction before the release of The Great Indian Kapil Show’s second season, Archana Puran Singh addressed audience comments about her fake laughing at bad jokes. She admitted that the makers believed that if she laughed at the jokes, people would find them funny, even if they were terrible. However, over the years, her laughter had become a tool for feedback, and she would even laugh if jokes were good. Archana said:
“Earlier people used to say that I laughed at bad jokes as well, I was not happy with it. What used to happen then is that if a particular joke didn’t have the punch, they (the makers) thought that if we use Archana’s laughter then woh punch utth jaayega, but it didn’t work that way, woh punch nahi utha, but main hi baith gayi. People started to think, ‘this woman is mad, she is laughing for nothing. The integrity of my laughter took the beating.”
