Junaid Khan Shared Kiran Rao Picked Sparsh Shrivastava To Play Lead In 'Laapataa Ladies' Over Him

Junaid Khan is one of the few new-age celebrities who have maintained his distance from social media. He is known for his reserved nature and immaculate performance on-screen. The actor debuted with the Netflix special film, Maharaj in 2024 and has since captivated the heart of the audience.

Junaid Khan revealed he auditioned for his father’s film, Laal Singh Chaddha

Junaid Khan made his Bollywood debut with Yash Raj Films’ Maharaj alongside Sharvari. The actor is the son of Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, and where it makes things easier, it didn’t stop his parents from putting him to the test. Despite being Aamir’s son, Junaid Khan had to audition for his father’s film, Laal Singh Chaddha. The actor was supposed to play a role alongside his stepmother, Kiran Rao.

Speaking to Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Junaid revealed that both he and Kiran were tested to play mother-son duo in the film. However, it was later decided that it was too big of a project to introduce any new faces. For the unversed, Aamir did not just play the lead in the film, Laal Singh Chaddha; he also co-produced the movie. The film was the remake of the popular 1994 American classic, Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks in the titular role. Junaid was quoted saying:

“You would have seen me in Laal Singh Chaddha because I tested for it, along with Kiran Rao. She played my mother. We shot 7 to 8 scenes for the film over four days, amounting to about 20 minutes of footage. It was a test for me as well. Papa wanted to see how I dealt with the material. Ultimately, it didn’t work out, largely due to budget reasons. It was a very expensive film to put a new person in.”

Junaid Khan also auditioned for the role of ‘Deepak Kumar’ in Laapataa Ladies

Laal Singh Chaddha was not the only project Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, auditioned for. During the conversation, the actor revealed he also auditioned for the lead role in Kiran Rao’s directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies. However, things did not work for Junaid, and Kiran ultimately chose Sparsh Shrivastava for the role of ‘Deepak Kumar’, believing the former was a better fit. The actor elaborated on the decision made by Kiran and stated:

“Laapataa Ladies was a very different scenario. I did a screen test for the film, but Kiran just said, ‘Sparsh Shrivastava is better for the part.’ And I agree with her. He was better suited for the role.”

The film was directed by Kiran and produced by Aamir Khan. It was also India’s official entry to the Oscars 2025. However, the film did not make the nominations list. Junaid revealed:
