Shah Rukh Khan has given several brilliant performances to the world in his career of over three decades. All his performances have one thing in common: as much as we love the actor, we equally love the songs in his films. However, when we credit the songs its obvious that the voice behind those songs need to be paid it’s respect to as well and many of Shah Rukh Khan’s songs in the 1990s were crooned by singer, Abhijeet Bhattacharya.
Lalit Pandit reveals that Shah Rukh Khan’s part of I Am The Best was the actor’s idea and not Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s
Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Lalit Pandit made an appearance on the reality singing show, Indian Idol. During the episode, the singer, Abhijeet, claimed that while recording the song I Am The Best for the film, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, he came up with the idea that Shah Rukh Khan should do the last bit of the song where he sings ‘Oh yes yes, sing it again’. Abhijeet was quoted saying:
“When we were recording it, I did a portion on top of the chorus where I said, ‘Oh yeah, I am the best.’ Then, I suggested to Lalit that Shah Rukh should do it. And within one hour, Shah Rukh was there, and he did it.”
However, Lalit Pandit, who had accompanied the singer, laughed and reminded Abhijeet that it was actually the actor’s idea. He revealed that he was also present during the recording and clearly remembers the occurrences of the day. Recalling the incident, he stated that the singer had reversed the story.
Lalit Pandit recalls how Shah Rukh Khan aced the recording in one take
Lalit Pandit had composed the song with his brother, Jatin Pandit. Sharing the anecdote, he revealed that Shah Rukh Khan was present at the recording. Lalit insisted that he remembered every detail. Abhijeet Bhattacharya looked mildly offended by his statement and was heard asking the composer, ‘Maine phenka?’
Lalit Pandit further revealed that Shah Rukh Khan wanted something extra for the song and had asked Abhijeet to do it. However, even after multiple takes the singer was not able to get it right. He added that it was when SRK decided to try it himself and aced it in one take. He was quoted saying:
“Shah Rukh kept saying ask him to do it in a certain way. Do you remember we had some problem in ‘I am the best’ portion? We kept rehearsing it more and more. Then Shah Rukh said ‘I will only do this last bit.’ So I said, ‘Yes please, go and do it’ and he did it in one take. He knew the style he wanted it in so it was simple for him. I guess, so he did it in one take.”
Lalit shared the conversation he had with Shah Rukh Khan while Abhijeet kept repeating, ‘It’s very embarrassing’. The singer seemed uncomfortable as the composer revealed the incident. Abhijeet Bhattacharya was still not convinced by the composer’s story and kept repeatedly asking if he was lying. Lalit laughed him off and stated:
“Yaar main baitha hu, tab toh mat phek.”
