Narayana Murthy Justified His Stance On Six-Day Work Compulsion, 'Take This To My Grave..'

Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, better known as Narayana Murthy, is the co-founder of Infosys, a company that stands as a testament to his influence in the information and technology sector. Despite his retirement, he continues to guide the company as chairman emeritus, infusing it with his visionary suggestions and ideas. His impact on Infosys is undeniable, as he has served as the CEO, president, and chief mentor, and his influence continues to shape the company.

Narayana Murthy created a ruckus when she shared that one should work more than 70 hours a week, and now he is back with a fresh set of controversies.

Narayana Murthy justifies his stance on no work-life balance and on six days of work compulsion

Narayana Murthy is one of the most hardworking people our generation will ever meet. He claims to work more than 14 hours a day, which is necessary in a developing country like India. Talking to Shereen Bhan at a business summit, Narayana Murthy added that he was upset when he adopted a five-day work scheme instead of six. He further added:

“Frankly, I was very disappointed when, in 1986, we shifted from a six-day work week to a five-day work week. When PM Modi is working 100 hours a week, the only way to show our appreciation for the things that are happening around us is by our work.”

Narayana Murthy added that he doesn’t believe in the concept of work and life balance as India can’t afford such luxuries in its given revenue state. As per him, he is proud of himself for having worked intensively all his life, and he has not changed his views over his work-hours statement. He further added:

“In India, there is no alternative to hard work. You have to work very hard even if you are smart. I am proud of having worked hard all my life. So I’m sorry I have not changed my view; I will take this opinion to the grave.”

When Narayana Murthy said Indian youth should work 70 hours a week

It was in October 2023 when Narayana Murthy was a guest on 3one4 Capital’s podcast, The Record, in which he talked about a series of things related to the work culture in India. When the billionaire was asked to share his thoughts on the weekly working hours in India, Narayana Murthy stated that Indians should start working 70 hours a week. Not only this, he also added that India’s productivity is the lowest in the world. Narayana Murthy also compared Indian work culture to Germany and Japan, sharing how the two countries made their citizens work for extended hours post World War II.
