Raj Babbar got married to Nadira back in 1975 when he was trying to make him stand out in the crowd as an actor in Bollywood. A year later, the duo became parents to their daughter, Juhi Babbar, and then a son, Arya Babbar. A few years later in 1982, Raj’s personal life turned upside down as he got involved with Smita Patil. The duo got married in 1983. Well, Raj again reunited with Nadira after Smita passed away due to childbirth complications.
Juhi Babbar shares that Raj Babbar’s family wanted Nadira to convert and adopt Hindu names
Well, recently, Raj Babbar’s daughter, Juhi talked about her father and shared how his family’s reaction was to his inter-faith marriage with Nadira. Raj Babbar’s daughter, Juhi recently sat for an interview with Lehren Retro, wherein she shared that it was her father’s family who wanted her mom, Nadira to convert to Hinduism and adopt names like Nirmala or Nirdesh. Juhi added that her paternal grandfather prevented the same. Talking about their family’s equation, Juhi added that their family is a true symbol of Indianness, and only a Christian is left to join to have all in their family. Stating that they belong to all religions, Juhi said:
“We are the symbol of Indianness. We’re just waiting for a Christian girl to join the family so we have all. We belong to all religions.”
Juhi Babbar talks about Nadira and Raj Babbar’s families’ current equation
Going forward in the interview, Juhi Babbar revealed what kind of equation Raj Babbar and Nadira’s family share. Juhi added that they take part in each festival with equal enthusiasm, be it Diwali or Eid, and each festival marks their parents’ presence. Juhi can be quoted as saying:
“We celebrate both Diwali and Eid with equal enthusiasm. There isn’t a single festival where both our parents aren’t present. I wouldn’t say we are a very religious family, but we are deeply cultural. It’s part of our culture for the entire family to be together for all festivals, birthdays and New Year’s. While others are out partying with friends on December 31, we stay home together.”
Juhi remarked that while their families aren’t deeply religious, they are cultural, and thus, they celebrate each of the festivals with utmost joy. Talking more about the same, Juhi stated that her maternal grandparents Sajjad Zaheer and Razia Sajjad Zaheer were comrades, and they would take part in cultural communal activities. In Juhi’s words:
“Also, they aren’t the typical religious people. My maternal grandparents, Sajjad Zaheer and Razia Sajjad Zaheer, were comrades. They didn’t usually fast but celebrated Eid. Even if my grandfather didn’t regularly read namaz, he read Eid namaz. They all have considered and followed these as cultural communal activities.”
Raj Babbar once talked about his second wife, Smita’s relationship with Nadira and Juhi
Raj Babbar’s relationship with Smita was a controversial chapter back then. In an old interview, Raj talked about the same. The actor said he first met Smita during the shoot of the film, Bheegi Palken. He shared how their first meeting ended up being a sweet clash between them, which eventually became the foundation of their relationship. He added that it was not due to his issues with Nadira that he fell for Smita, but it just happened. The actor also remarked that his first wife, Nadria was extremely understanding of his feelings, while his daughter, Juhi loved being around Smita as well.
