Actor, Sanjay Kapoor made his Bollywood debut with the 1995 film, Prem, alongside then-newcomer, Tabu. While the film failed to impress critics, Sanjay’s performance earned him lead roles in other movies like Auzaar, Mohabbat, and Sirf Tum. Despite these early successes in landing roles, Sanjay hasn’t had the easiest journey in Bollywood. His rocky career even led him to do only support roles at one point. However, if there was one thing that never wavered, it was Sanjay’s grit and dedication to his work. And these qualities were likely a result of his humble upbringing, which the actor opened up about in a recent interview.

Sanjay Kapoor opens up about seven family members living in a two-bedroom-hall apartment

Sanjay Kapoor recently appeared on the YouTube channel, Timeout With Ankit, and opened up about his humble upbringing in Chembur, Mumbai. The actor revealed that while growing up, he had lived with his parents and three siblings, Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, and Reena Kapoor, in a two-bedroom-hall apartment.

Things had become even tighter for the family when Sanjay’s grandmother passed away, as his grandfather left Meerut and moved in with them. Sanjay opened up about living and sleeping arrangements, saying:

“We lived in a two-bedroom-hall apartment in Chembur. After my grandmother passed away, my grandfather came to stay with us, taking over the room I shared with Reena. We were already close-knit, but his arrival brought us even closer. We’d sleep on mattresses in the living room. We only had one AC in the house, which was in my mom and dad’s room, so I’d sometimes sleep on the sofa in their room at night.”

Sanjay Kapoor reveals his father, Surinder Kapoor, provided his children with the best despite challenges

According to Sanjay Kapoor, his parents never let their kids feel the effects of their modest beginnings as they provided them with the very best. So much so, that they never even went abroad until their kids had. Sanjay recalled:

“My parents didn’t go abroad until they had sent the whole family overseas first. They gave us the best schooling. We were having the best food. All my friends would wait for the food made at our house.”

When Boney Kapoor opened up about his father, Surinder Kapoor, losing 10-12 jobs

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Sanjay Kapoor’s brother and film producer, Boney Kapoor, once opened up about why his father, Surinder, moved to Bombay. According to Boney, his father had been pushed to do so by his grandfather and Prithviraj Kapoor due to his unstable professional life. The producer said:

“My father was brought to Bombay by Prithviraj Kapoor. My grandfather handed over my father to Prithviraj ji because my father left about 10-12 jobs. Left, in the sense, he was thrown out because he was siding with and supporting the workers, fought for their causes.”

Boney shared some details on what his father’s life was like after marriage. The struggling Surinder had to live in Raj Kapoor’s outhouse, which was usually occupied by the househelp. However, the proud father was able to see his kids succeed as Boney went on to become a top producer in Hindi cinema and Anil Kapoor became a ’90s superstar. Sanjay, too, has managed to stick around in the industry despite his rocky career, last being seen in the 2024 film, Murder Mubarak.
