Mukesh Gautam’s win as director hasn’t been Baaghi Di Dhee’s first win at the 70th National Film Awards. Earlier, the film had won in the “Best Punjabi film” category. In a conversation with The Indian Express, Mukesh had expressed how he felt that his efforts to make meaningful Punjabi films were being honoured with the win. He said:

“Whenever I make a film, my effort is to create something meaningful. We need to accept that not every film is for the entertainment of the masses, but films like ‘Baghi Di Dhee’ also have a special audience who watch, accept and appreciate.”

Mukesh then went on to talk about his views on how Punjabi cinema had evolved overtime. Confessing that he felt the industry still had a long way to go, he told The Indian Express:

“Punjabi cinema, undoubtedly, has really evolved in the past one decade or so but even now, there’s still a long way to go. We still lack that exceptional work like Malayali, Bengali and other languages. Everyone is running after commercial cinema which might be entertaining but lacks meaning. Films like ‘Baghi Di Dhee’ aim to fill that gap. We still have a long way to go when it comes to quality works in Punjabi language.”

Baaghi Di Dhee takes inspiration from a true story

For the unversed, Baaghi Di Dhee is based on a story by the late Gurmukh Singh Musafir, which was inspired by true events. It follows the story of Deep, a young Punjabi girl, and her father who were actively involved in the Ghadar revolutionary movement. Their fight for azadi led to the British police officers arresting the father.

However, in an attempt to save him, Deep plunges a pen into an officer and kills him. The father is jailed nonetheless, and Deep is taken away by a relative, who was doubling as a British spy. Deep is killed by being dumped in a canal, and her father avenges her death after years, once he has been released from prison.
